Getting diagnosed with skin cancer is scary, but getting treatment is a lot less stressful if you if you understand your options before selecting a skin cancer surgeon and treatment plan. Depending on your type of skin cancer, Mohs micrographic surgery may be one of the best skin cancer treatment options available to you.
What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery is a procedure in which the entire lesion of skin cancer is excised utilizing frozen section histology. This means that the tissue is examined while the surgery is taking place, to make sure all of the cancer is removed in a single session. During a Mohs skin cancer treatment procedure, a thin slice of tissue is removed, and observed under a microscope. If any cancer remains, the procedure is performed again until no cancer remains.
Though the size and location of the skin cancer play a major role in scarring potential, the Mohs procedure is designed to lead to less scarring than other skin cancer treatments.
Mohs Surgery – A Better Skin Cancer Treatment
Mohs surgery has an extremely high rate of success as a skin cancer treatment. Studies on the procedure have shown that Mohs surgery is successful at treating and curing primary basal cell carcinoma in 97 to 99 percent of cases, and successful at treating squamous cell carcinoma in 94 percent of cases. The success rate for treating melanoma-in-situ (early stage melanoma) ranges from 75 to 95 percent and is largely dependent on the skill of the surgeon.
