IPL PHOTOFACIAL
IPL photo rejuvenation, also known as Intense Pulsed Light or photofacial, is a safe and effective procedure for treating skin that has been severely sun-damaged, as well as treating conditions such as rosacea, age spots, broken capillaries, blemishes, freckles and hyperpigmentation. Utilizing an intense light source, IPL works by breaking down the upper layer of the skin in order to generate new skin growth. Regenerated skin appears to be brighter, smoother, more even-toned and more youthful-looking. Some patients can begin to see results after their first session. While a series of treatments are suggested, the exact number depends on the patient’s individual needs. At RejuvedermMD Aesthetic Center, we utilize the Cynosure® MPX Elite laser, Icon™ laser, and the Rohrer® Spectrum laser for IPL procedures. This advanced, high-powered technology is revolutionary in that it provides the benefits of two gold standard wavelengths which have safe and proven long-lasting results for the treatment of sun-damaged and pigmented skin.
How it works
IPL is a noninvasive procedure that delivers results by emitting a range of light waves at the patient’s damaged skin. These waves turn and target either melanin, the brown pigment found in age spots or freckles, or hemoglobin, the red blood cells found in the blood vessels. As the light waves pass through the skin, they are absorbed by either the melanin or hemoglobin. This causes the melanin pigment to break up, or in the case of hemoglobin, damages the vessel wall. The fragmented pigment or damaged, smaller vessels are absorbed by the skin, causing them to appear less visible. Thus, the patient is left with more even-toned skin or less visible capillaries.
What to expect
With IPL, a patient can usually expect a relatively pain-free session with no downtime. The patient’s eyes are covered with special eyewear to protect them from the light source. The hand-piece has a smooth surface which is applied gently to the face to emit pulses of light. A patient may experience a slight stinging sensation comparable to a rubber band snap. After the treatment, the area is cleaned and a moisturizer with sunscreen is applied. Depending on the size of the treatment area, sessions can be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 90 minutes. If there is any mild swelling afterwards, call the office or refer to your post-care sheet.
